The Challenge
We know that communities have visionary ideas for growing and transforming their local economies, but often need targeted support to be ready to bring these ideas to life.
Through the inaugural cohort of our Coal Communities Get Ready! Challenge, we identified a cohort of 12 organizations that were in the early stages of developing their economic development projects. Each awardee received one-year grants valued at $250,000 and customized technical assistance. Learn more about the inaugural cohort below.
Stay tuned for the launch of the next round of the Challenge in late summer 2025, which will focus on supporting projects at earlier stages of development and implementation.

Meet the Cohort
The JTF prioritized funding visionary projects with the potential to generate significant economic impact, produce measurable outcomes, and can serve as models for other communities in transition. Winning projects cover a range of industries and sectors including tourism, clean energy, agriculture, manufacturing, and healthcare, and community planning. More than 70 organizations applied to be part of the inaugural cohort, with 12 winners selected.
What We Looked For
We looked for organizations working to create equitable local economies through community economic development strategies and workforce programs, with model projects that are generalizable and replicable. Grants and technical assistance will help pilot and grow these projects and build the organizational infrastructure needed to apply for and manage federal funding. Specifically, we looked for community-led efforts that:
Connect rural and urban markets to strengthen local economies.
We support initiatives that advance key sectors, invest in local leaders, build regional networks for collaboration, and creatively engage the private sector.
Stimulate entrepreneurship.
We support efforts to promote collaboration among entrepreneurs, capital providers, and researchers. We will also support efforts to incubate and scale innovators and entrepreneurial training programs.
Train workers for new economy careers.
We support innovative workforce development programs that train coal-affected workers and community members for well-paying, 21st century jobs, including programs that offer wrap-around support, engage local businesses, address worker skill mismatch, and create remote work opportunities.
