The Rural Development arm of the United States Department of Agriculture recently hosted a two-day workshop that brought together community and local business leaders and economic developers with representatives from state, federal and regional agencies to discuss financial opportunities available to former coal communities.“This is an opportunity for us to recognize the people who powered our nation to become what it is today,” said Betsy Dirksen Londrigan, administrator of rural business-cooperative service with USDA Rural Development. “It’s a chance to listen and find out what’s needed and targeting federal investment dollars into these communities because they’re writing our next chapter.”
