At AES Indiana’s Petersburg Generating Station, two of the power plant’s four coal-burning units have already retired and the last will shut down in 2025, ending an era of coal burning that started in the late 1960s. Power generation, however, will continue, as former mine lands and retired coal-burning power plants like those at PGS are increasingly attractive spots for new renewable development.
